What is Google AI Mode?
Meet Google AI Mode

Google has unleashed a major evolution in search called Google AI Mode, and it’s now rolling out to New Zealand users. Touted as the biggest shift in search in over 20 years.

AI Mode transforms Google Search into a conversational, AI-powered experience. This new feature was first introduced in the U.S. and now available in Aotearoa is Google’s most powerful AI search experience yet.

It allows you to ask complex questions and receive in-depth answers as if you are chatting with an expert, complete with cited web links for further exploration. In this blog post, I will explain what Google AI Mode is, how it works, what its New Zealand launch means, and how businesses can adapt to stay visible in the era of AI-driven search.

What Exactly Is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is a new generative AI feature built directly into Google Search. Think of it as a special mode or tab in Google that gives you AI-generated answers within the search results page. Instead of just showing the usual list of blue links (or the brief AI overviews you might have seen at the top of results), AI Mode engages in a more conversational Q&A style of search. You can ask anything on your mind – even detailed, multi-part questions – and Google will respond with a rich, AI-composed answer with references and links to the web. In Google’s own words, AI Mode is designed to make searching more like “having a conversation with an expert” who can handle a wide array of questions.

How Does Google AI Mode Work?

Use AI to empower, assist and inspire you!

Behind the scenes, Google AI Mode is powered by an advanced AI model called Gemini 2.5, a custom version of Google’s latest AI developed by Google DeepMind. This AI has enhanced reasoning capabilities, which allows it to handle far more complex questions than a regular search. In fact, early testers have been entering queries 2–3 times longer than typical Google searches asking elaborate things like travel plans, product comparisons, or nuanced “how does this work?” questions that normally would require piecing together info from many sources. AI Mode thrives on these tough queries by doing the heavy lifting for you.

How to Access Google’s AI Mode in Search

AI Mode might sound fancy, but Google has made it easy to use. If you’re in New Zealand and searching in English, you may notice a new “AI” option on Google’s search results page. Here’s how to find and use AI Mode:

On Desktop Web: Perform a Google search as usual. On the results page, look at the top where you normally see tabs like All, Images, News, etc. You should now see an “AI Mode” tab to the left of the “All” tab.

How to access google AI Search

On Mobile (Google App or Browser): After you search, look for a prompt or button to “Try AI” or a toggle for AI Mode. On some devices, you might swipe or tap a tab to enter AI Mode. Google often also shows a teaser prompt like “Meet AI Mode – ask detailed questions for better responses” on the search home screen to invite you in.

What Google AI Mode Means for SEO and Businesses

Every time Google changes the way it presents information, it has ripple effects for website owners and businesses that rely on search traffic. AI Mode is no exception, it’s a paradigm shift for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). The big question for businesses is: “How do I stay visible and relevant if Google’s AI is answering more questions directly?” The good news is that SEO fundamentals still matter a great deal. In fact, Google has stated that you don’t need to do anything special to rank in AI Mode, the same signals that make your site rank in traditional search (quality content, relevance, authority and schema) make it eligible to be cited by the AI.

Key Tips for SEO in the AI Mode Era

So, how can you ensure your business still thrives in the AI-driven search landscape? The key is to adapt your SEO strategy for AI Mode while sticking to core principles of quality. Essentially, you want to be the site that Google’s AI trusts and cites.

Continue Investing in High-Quality, Authoritative Content: Content that is helpful, accurate and authoritative is more important than ever. Google’s AI will pull from the best content it can find. If your pages offer in-depth answers, unique insights, and demonstrate expertise, they’re “already primed to appear in AI Mode”. Follow the E-E-A-T guidelines (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) diligently.

Use Structured Data and SEO Best Practices: Now is not the time to neglect technical SEO. Strong fundamentals what some are now calling “Generative Engine Optimisation” or GEO were in past less important now actually critical. This means ensuring your site is well-structured, fast, and crawlable, and implementing structured data (schema) where appropriate. Structured data helps Google understand your content in detail (for example, marking up FAQ sections, product specs, reviews, and alike).
